Join the Few, the Proud, the Predictable

Invest in an Exchange server with fault protection. If you want action, adventure, and the thrill of discovery—join the Marines. Implementing a sound Exchange server is just the opposite—predictability, standards, and compatibility rule. However, if you are considering a cluster, grab your calendar. Its setup can be lengthy, and ongoing maintenance is expensive and much more time-consuming than necessary. With Exchange 5.5, you have cumbersome fail-over scripts to write, test, and manage. You also need to make sure your servers have the identical driver versions and BIOS revs. Although Exchange 2000 eliminates a good amount of scripting, you still have some fancy configuring to do—and don't forget the joy of fail-over/fail-back testing.
